The Boston Schoolyard Initiative, various neighborhoods, Boston, MA
CBA designed schoolyards for twelve Boston public schools through the former Schoolyard Initiative program. Each of the schoolyards required an extensive public design process, which involved parents, neighbors, students and teachers. An important goal for each of the schools was to have the playground present educational opportunities as well as physical challenges.
Many of CBA’s schoolyard projects have included an outdoor classroom. These features allow urban students a chance to explore and study plants, weather, and natural systems, using planters, weather stations, grain size tables, composters, small green roofs on storage sheds, rolling terrain with various plant communities, and seating areas for class gatherings and reflection.
The Boston Schoolyard Initiative and CBA Landscape Architects, LLC, were included in the May 2015 issue of Landscape Architecture Magazine and in the June 2014 issue of Landscape Architect and Specifier News.
