Washington Park- Chelsea, MA
CBA's design for this neighborhood “commons” strikes a balance between refurbishing an historic greenspace and providing new activities. The site's defining diagonal walkways are joined by a meandering path connecting several new play features, selected to add a sculptural element to the site rather than
the first impression being one of a playground. The many significant trees and historic stone wall around the park were protected. Paired fieldstone walls terrace the slope on both sides of the upper half of the main path, adding a dynamic element and providing more seating. Near the main entrance, a stepped wood and metal trellis shades groups of benches. The flattest area remains as open lawn for informal games.
