WESTPORT MIDDLE-HIGH school, WESTPORT, MA

Built on the former Westport Middle School building site, the newly constructed combined Westport Middle-High School building serves 860 students in grades 5-12 in a unique building that supports STEAM learning on a 24 acre site with multiple athletic fields and courts. Wide sidewalks lead to the main entrance of the school establishing a highly visible location for student drop-off and pick-up. Central to the building are two outdoor courtyards that function as accessory cafeteria space, outdoor classrooms, or areas for larger gathering to occur such an award ceremonies or graduation.

Inspired by the vernacular New England farm-style stone walls that are often found marking property boundaries in the area, a new stone wall serves as a loose edge to the campus boundary. A variety of shade trees were planted throughout the site especially within the new parking areas, which were expanded to accommodate 300 vehicles. New athletic fields for a wide variety of sports were positioned at the front and rear of the school building. Additionally, an existing site memorial for 9/11 victims was relocated within the school grounds to accommodate the new school building.
